A Powerful Reminder of Our Daily Choices

- We become what we think about -

Today, I want to share with you a profound story that holds a deep and transformative message. It's the tale of the two wolves within us, a story that illuminates the daily battle we all face and the power we have over the outcome of this battle. Understanding this story can empower you with the knowledge that life is truly a series of choices, and those choices shape the person you become and the life you lead.

This image is highlighting the importance of our responsibility to choose which one we focus our attention upon. I hope this resonates with you and reinforces the message of empowerment and choice.

The Tale of the Two Wolves

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight, and it is between two wolves. One is evil—he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good—he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you—and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?" The old chief simply replied, "The one you feed."

The Power of Awareness

The significance of this story lies in the awareness it brings to our daily lives. Each of us has these two wolves battling within us. One embodies all the negative emotions and destructive behaviours, while the other represents all that is positive and constructive. The realisation that we are in control of which wolf wins is a powerful awakening. It tells us that we have the power of choice, the ability to determine the direction of our thoughts, actions, and ultimately, our lives.

The Daily Battle

Every day, we face numerous situations that can trigger either the good wolf or the bad wolf. A minor inconvenience can spark anger and frustration, feeding the bad wolf. Conversely, a simple act of kindness can nurture the good wolf. The key is to become aware of this daily battle and consciously choose which wolf to feed.

- We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid -

Feeding the Good Wolf

Feeding the good wolf means directing our thoughts and actions towards positivity and growth. It involves practicing gratitude, showing compassion, embracing humility, and seeking joy in everyday moments. It means making a conscious effort to focus on what is good in our lives and in others. By doing so, we strengthen the good wolf, allowing it to thrive and become the dominant force within us.

- I am grateful for the simple pleasures that bring me happiness -

The Power of Choice

Life is a series of choices, and each choice has a consequence. When we choose to feed the good wolf, we are actively shaping our character and our destiny. This awareness gives us immense power over our lives. It means that no matter our circumstances, we can always choose our response. We can choose to rise above negativity and strive for greatness.

The Role of Self-Belief

Our beliefs and expectations play a crucial role in this battle. If we believe that we are deserving of a good and fulfilling life, we are more likely to feed the good wolf. However, if we harbour self-doubt and negative self-perceptions, we inadvertently feed the bad wolf. Self-belief is the cornerstone of personal growth. It is the foundation upon which we build our dreams and aspirations.

The Importance of Personal Growth and Education

In the 21st century, remaining ignorant is a choice. We live in an age where information and knowledge are readily available at our fingertips. Personal growth and education are not just optional; they are essential. Neglecting to educate ourselves and develop our skills is a dereliction of our duty to ourselves, to God, and to humanity. Our value in life comes from the service we provide to others, and we can only offer our best when we are continuously growing and learning.

  1. I currently live in Kansas, USA. Two of the three currently recognized Cherokee tribes live not far south of me in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The third is located further east in North Carolina. The Cherokee are known as an Iroquoian-language people believed to have migrated soulth hundreds of years before contact with European settlers, from the “Five Nations” Iroquoi who lived in what is now central and west New York State, Southern Quebec and Ontario, and into northwestern Pennsylvania.
Growing up as a boy in Southern Ontario, I was taken under the wing of the son of an Iroquois chief and taught many of the cultural elements of these great people. One of the stories shared with me was that of the two wolves. It is wonderful to hear it again, all these years later.

    1. Thank you Stephen for taking the time to share the locations and some history of the Cherokee tribes. Isn’t it interesting to imagine that no matter where we are residing – we ALL still fight the same Two Wolves – and the result of the life we experience depends upon which wolf we chose to feed.
